Non Prescription Colored Contacts

Non prescription colored contacts are a good choice for those who want to try color contacts for the first time.  However, there is some misunderstanding regarding how these lenses really work.  While non prescription colored contacts do not have any corrective power, you still need a doctor’s prescription to order a pair.

But do not let that scare you.  If you have been to the optometrist in the last two years, your prescription will be valid enough to order colored contacts.  A new appointment is not required, as you can simply give them the information from your last visit.   In many cases, your information can be faxed or emailed the same day.

Now if you talk to someone who is older, this process might seem a bit unusual.  In the past non prescription contacts were like reading glasses; you could buy them over the counter without a doctor’s approval.   Unfortunately, people did not understand how to take care of lenses.   Not only would they neglect cleaning them, but they would also share them with other people.  As a result, wearers started developing eye infections.    The government had to step in, which is why prescriptions are needed.

In any case, when you buy non prescription colored contacts, the goal is to find something that will complement your features.  If you have light eyes, you should consider getting lenses that will enhance, rather than hide your current hue.  This strategy is not as effective when you have dark eyes, as your natural color will overpower the contact.  With that said, you would have to get a contact that “covers” the iris, transforming it into a completely different color.  People with lighter eyes can also use this strategy, though the result may not be as striking, (as there would be no contrast against their natural color).

As far as brands, Acuvue2 Colors and FreshLook ColorBlends tend to be the most popular for non prescription colored contacts.  Both offer natural hues ranging from blue to green.  For wilder, non-human hues, you will have to buy from companies that specialize in costume-oriented contacts.   Some of these might make your eyes purple; others will make you look like a vampire.  The level of creativity is amazing, but you still need to be responsible.  Whether you get traditional colored contacts, or something more off-the-wall, make sure you clean them with saline solution.  And NEVER share them with others, as the eye is a very sensitive area.
